• Acne: Acne problems usually arise when pores become obstructed due to a combination of dead skin cells and excess oil. 
• Warts: These are rough bumps that form on the skin.

Although dealing with acne during teenage years may seem like a common occurrence, this can leave behind many types of scars– including emotional ones. Having to deal with skin issues through these awkward years can lead to complex conditions like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and other behavioral problems.  Reaching out for help on time can help your child embrace healthy skin while facing adolescence with confidence.

The ideal treatment plan to deal with acne and lessen the chance of scarring is based on your child’s symptoms, age, general health, and the severity of their case.

Pediatric acne treatment may include: 

• Gentle and regular skincare
• Topical cleansers and creams, lotions, gels, or other products
• Laser therapy, light therapy, or chemical peels 
• Procedures like draining a cyst or injecting it with medicine

Topical medicines may range from the following options:

• Benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria 
• Antibiotics to help stop or slow down the growth of bacteria and reduce inflammation 
• Retinoids stop new comedones from forming, encourage new skin cell growth, and unplug pimples

Oral medications may also be prescribed and may range from the following options:

• Antibiotics, such as tetracycline, doxycycline, or erythromycin, to treat moderate to severe acne
• Spironolactone which can be used in women with certain types of acne
• Isotretinoin may be prescribed for severe acne and helps prevent new acne and scarring
